My first experiences as an English Language assistant at Salvador Allende Elementary School.

It has been three months now that I have been working as a Language assistant at Salvador Allende. This is my first time working with primary school students, and so far I have been very impressed by the skill level and comprehension of the young children. My job is to spend 12 hours a week at the school to be a direct link to the American culture and English language. I help with reading and pronunciation, as well as working with students in small groups to review old and new subjects. Something that still really impresses me is that the students learn about relevant subjects such as body systems and weather in English. They are so lucky to be learning such specific and difficult vocabulary at such a young age! I really enjoy working with the young kids. It is very rewarding to see them improving and trying to communicate in a new language. I’m fortunate to be able to work with every grade and to see the different levels of the students and how they build on previous knowledge.

In the 3 months time I have developed relationships with individual students and entire classes. Even though my time is short with the students, I still feel I am making an impact on their education. Whether it’s a massive group hug from a whole class of first graders or a shy smile in the hallway from one of my 6th graders, my students make sure to let me know that they are happy to see me. I also have great relationships with the whole staff of Salvador Allende. Everyone has gone out of their way to make me feel welcome and comfortable at the school. I feel very lucky to have a great connection with all of the teachers in the English department and always feel comfortable working alongside them in the classroom.

One of my favorite experiences working at this school so far was when I went on a field trip to El Torcal with the 5th grade students. It was fun to take a trip outside of the classroom and to see them learning in a dynamic and real-life environment. I’m excited to still have so many months ahead, and I’m looking forward to continuing to teach and learn from my students.
